This is my second segment of “Gamers on twitter”, This time I gotta toke about the ego problems we all have. Notice that I said “WE” cause I believe its something we all do. Gamers are competitive and passionate naturally and that is where our ego comes in. Its the competitive nature that brings us joy of being #1 or being that damn good. Our passion boosts our ego too, Sometimes we love something so much that we blindly support and defend it. Like I said in my last blog post, We all play different games on different platforms so its hard to judge a specific group. However I wanna point out a couple example of gamers who let their egos get to them and sometimes it puts a bad image on the gaming community.
Note: I am close friends with all types of gamers. The short list believe is not based on 1 specific person. Not everyone is the same, everyone is unique in their own right but some people fall in the negative stereotype that makes us all look bad.
The Pro gamer
A pro gamer is defined as someone who plays video games at a professional level AND gets paid for it. Sounds like a awesome job right? Its pretty stressful and with that stress we often see pro gamers have this attitude where they are better than everyone else. His ego problem is that he believes his in game skill/ level carries over into the real world.
The Pro blogger
Very similar to the Pro gamer but instead they either run a site or is a part of one. Again, Its a stressful job but with some cool benefits. Going to big events, getting press passes, free review copies and more. With all that free swag and special its easy to feel special, Like you are above everyone else. Sure, The average gamer does get jealous when bloggers get a review copy 3 weeks before a game comes out. Anything that is given to you in life you should be gratful for cause it can be taken away easily.
The Guy that has every game
Some would call him “The ultimate gamer” cause he owns hundreds of games and has the money to blow like that. He seems like such a cool guy but with all that money he can’t buy himself a personally. The ego problem with this guy is he feel like he has it all and he done it all. You just bought Skyrim? He bought the collectors edition on midnight. You can’t have a conversation with this guy cause he will always feel a need to 1 up you.
The youtuber with thousands of subscribers
I’m a youtuber myself and I tell everyone that no matter what we say we do care about views/ subscribers but some care about it too much. If you go on youtube and look under gaming you will see that Call of Duty commentators have taken over. I don’t want to disrespect anyone who put hard work into videos because I know first hand that it is hard work. However, Getting lots of views on youtube does not make anyone a movie star. Their ego problem is believing in their own hype too much. Lots of youtubers could make a huge positive impact in the gaming community but it seems they are more focused on getting that adsense check.
The model who is a gamer
I don’t believe in separating girls from guys when it comes to gaming. However, We all seen females who use their sex appeal to gain a follower base online. Just like the youtuber, Her ego problem is she that she feels her followers puts her above the average gamer. In most cases she has thousands of followers on twitter but only follows about 100.
The bottom line
There are plenty of ways to get noticed in the gaming community but we can’t let it get to our heads. Just like with any thing you do, raising to the top does not mean you are above the community that supported you from day one. My goal is to help build the community so that better things can happen for all of us. At the end of the day you can do whatever you want with your free time but for the love of gaming please do not be an egotistic A$$.
