NYC Gamers: I wanna do a retro themed meetup thingy, good idea?

The idea of putting together a meetup event for retro gaming as been floating around my head for a while now. I seen a good amount of tournaments but they mostly feature the same games Street Fighter, UMvC 3, Maybe some Soul Calibur and Tekken but thats about it. Theres also some Call of Duty or Pokemon Tournaments but what about the retro games? Those tournaments are fun but mostly focus on the competitive side of gaming rather than the social and casual side. I want to change this or at least spark up an idea for someone who can actually make this happen.

I am only 1 guy so there is only so much I can do, Thankfully I have been meeting up with some awesome NYC gamers who could support this idea. Working as a team is the only way something like this can get pulled off. I would need help getting a location, organization and things like that but it is not impossible. My idea is that each event would have its own theme like for fighting games, Racing, Mario Vs Sonic etc. I still have many of my game consoles but we would still need extra games (We will try not to use emulators). Since we got all these games it would seem right to hold small tournaments with prizes but I want this to be more than about gaming, It has to be social.

Besides gaming, It would be a social event so we would have activities that encourage everyone to get to know each other. That is very important because I been to gaming events where people just sit there playing games and no on says a word, Its boring and that is not the way I played retro games with my friends. Think back to the SNES days when it was Friday night and you would play it for hours and eating junk food with your friends/family. That is the goal right there. Speaking of food, There would be lots of it including drinks. There would be a small fee but it would mostly be to cover food.

The issue is not really time or money, Its getting enough people to support this idea. I’m just throwing this idea out there, So if you guys wanna see this idea happen please contact me and we can get the ball rolling. Big sites like IGN, GameSpot or Kotaku don’t bother doing gamer meetups and it makes me feel like they don’t care about the community but I do. If we can get the right support then I can promise you a fun day.
